President Obama made history as the first African American President of the United States. I can still remember sitting on my couch watching the election live on tv when the state of California put him over for the necessary amount of votes. The reactions of people around the world still resonate in my mind. Thinking of the people dancing in the streets of Kenya and the woman crying on her knees sends shivers up my spine. President Obama has one of the toughest jobs around, and he literaly has the weight of the world on his shoulders. No other person is watched or scrutinized more than President Obama. Regardless of how we feel about his race or his policies we should uphold him in prayer. Paul stated this in 1 Timothy 2:1-2 “1)I exhort therefore, that first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;2)For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.” What this says to us is that in order to live in peace and harmony in godliness we must pray for all in authority. We must learn to embrace our differences and see past personal hangups. We should be excited that we live in a country where anyone can become president within the parameters of the constitution without regard to race, religion, or gender. Let us remember what Paul said and pray for not only President Obama but all the way down to the mayors and board members. God said in 2 Chronicles 7:14 “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

God calls us in many different ways to do different things. Depending on our response we are either rewarded for our obedience or we suffer the consequences of our disobedience. One person who experienced the results of being disobedient to God was Jonah. God told him to go to Nineveh and tell the people to repent from their wicked ways. Jonah instead boarded a ship in an attempt to run from God. A great storm came and caused the sea to rage and threaten to break apart the ship. Jonah’s shipmates were very afraid and began to cry to their gods. They asked Jonah who was asleep below deck to call on his god. Jonah told them to throw him overboard to calm the storm. Once they threw him overboard, Jonah was swallowed by a great fish. He was there three days and nights before he decided to answer God’s call. What this says to us today is we can run from God but we eventually must take heed to what he has set before us. God doesn’t give us more than we are capable of doing. Futhermore He equips us for the task at hand. When Moses told God that he wasn’t a good speaker and therefore he wouldn’t be able to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, God sent Moses’ brother Aaron to speak for him. We have a choice to answer or ignore God’s call, but if we answer the reward is great. Revelation 4:20 says “Behold I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” God is knocking today. Will we be like Jonah and run the other way or will we open up our hearts and receive Him?

What does God’s voice sound like? Does he still speak to us in the same manner as he spoke to Moses to whom he spoke from a burning bush? I believe the Lord speaks to us in different ways that are dependent upon our current situation. I am hearing the Lord’s voice constantly. I often wonder if it is because He is speaking to me more or am I listening to Him more? Just as a child knows his/her mother’s voice Children of God know their Father’s voice. We must learn to listen to God’s voice and be obedient to His word. How do we learn to hear God’s voice? 1 Timothy 2:15 tells us to “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” By studying we learn who God is and what he expects of us. Just as Moses answered God’s call we must listen for God’s voice and be ready for his instructions.

As I ponder our theme, I wonder how is it possible to Live Victoriously in the Face of Adversity? We all have heard that God puts no more on us than we can bear and He is too wise to make mistakes. How do those who are facing very tough circumstances find joy in their situation? As we stay glued to our t.v. sets in anticpation of Hurricane Ike, the devastion is only beginning to become apparent. There was a terrible train crash in Los Angeles where the death toll is expected to go higher. How do these families come to terms with this tragedy and find peace? The quest for my answer took me to Isaiah 55: 8-9 which tells us “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” What these verses suggest to me is that God is all knowing and all powerful. As far as the heavens stretch from the earth so do God’s thoughts and ways. Our minds can not begin to comprehend God’s ways, but our faith assures of his presence. For the Bible says that he will neither leave us nor forsake us. Further assurance is found in Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” So we can live victoriously in hard times because Psalms 18:2 tells us “The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.”
